“i love my cars, i lay on top of them”
My aunt said this to me once, and I’ll never forget it. I repeat this all the time about various things. It was less about the actual cars and more about taking pride in the work (mental, physical, and actual, like, paycheck work) she did to build a happy, healthy life that she loved.
I love my kitchen tools1. I lay on top of them.
first signs of spring
There are buds starting to bloom on some cherry trees in my neighborhood and greens starting to poke out of the ground from what I believe are soon-to-be-daffodils. 🥰
removing barriers
(at least the ones I can control)
This concept took me a long time to name.2 In order to do/be/get/whatever the things are that I’m after, I learned the only way for me to do that is to work towards removing controllable barriers. For me, this looks like:
I want to cook at home more —> keep my go-to cookbooks next to my pans3
I want to spend more quality time with friends —> schedule time together in advance and (try our best to) stick to it
I want to take out the recycling before it gets gross and weird —> move the recycling bin to a place that actually makes sense and stop chucking waterloo cans under my sink
In the spirit of removing barriers, at the end of last year I worked with the gals behind Neatnik DC to structurally overhaul my closet and help me remove the physical and mental closet barriers in an effort to make my life a little easier every day. I live in the first floor of a townhouse built in the 1800s that was converted into multiple apartments at some point in the past century. The “closet” as it existed before Katherine & Nicole got their hands on it was not built for a fashionable, messy millennial lady that eventually wants there to be space to share. I can’t say enough great things about K&N — they did everything from the initial “oh my god, this is a challenge” consultation, to co-designing a concept that maximizes every inch of space while maintaining the original structural components, professional install, and teaching me how to fold my little tank tops into little squares. In addition to being incredibly savvy in organizing & designing concepts, they are also very fun, smart and nice, which made them amazing to work and hang out with. You can (embarrassingly) see a before and after here.4
and with that said…
folding my laundry and putting it away ASAP
This is just an absolutely wild concept and I can’t believe it took me 33 years to figure out how AMAZING it is!! What a rush!!

That Sounds So Good by Carla Lalli Music; Ready, Set, Cook by Dawn Perry & Cook This Book by Molly Baz are in heavy rotation rn.
Full disclosure, hiring help and going absolutely HAM at the container store is a privilege and not necessarily a little thing (it was a big thing - an investment in time, money, energy), but it made a LOT more space for the little things, so there.
